Character Notes: My Korra is pulled from the second episode of LoK so as to match up with Bolin's timeline.

History:
Korra was born into the Southern Water Tribe - the home of legendary Waterbending Master, Katara. Unknown to her parents, Tonraq and Senna, she was born at the same time Avatar Aang, an Airbender, died. While it was known that the next Avatar would be a Waterbender, no one could have predicted that it would be the daughter of the two simple Southern Water Tribe members.

At age four, Korra's Avatar identity revealed itself when her parents witnessed her bending not just water but also earth and fire. No bender but the Avatar can bend more than one element and so they knew that their little Korra was destined for more than just acclaim within the Tribe. They sent for the Order of the White Lotus and the stage was set.

The Order of the White Lotus was charged with the task of finding, protecting, and training each new Avatar and had been searching the various Nations seeking the Waterbender who would be the next Avatar. While they were, at first, skeptical of Tonraq and Senna's claims they saw for themselves Korra's abilities as she proudly showed them off, proclaiming, "I'm the Avatar and you've gotta deal with it!" It was a statement that would come to define her to the world and to herself.

Unlike Aang, Korra fully embraced her Avatar destiny and, under the direction of the Order, mastered three of the four elements - water, earth, and fire. Air, though, was going to be a problem. During the time of the 100 Year War with the Fire Nation, the Air Nomad Tribe was almost completely wiped from the world because they were the smallest nation and the next Avatar was destined to be an Air Nomad. Only one Airbender survived - Aang.

Aang went on to become a fully realized Avatar and save the world, bringing peace and creating the United Republic of Nations with the capital being Republic City. Aang and Katara were married and had three children, Kya, Bumi, and Tenzin. Only one of the children was an Airbender - Tenzin - and the completion of Korra's training would eventually fall on his shoulders as he was the last Airbending Master in the world after Aang's death.

Waterbending Master, Katara, had the final say on whether or not Korra was ready to move onto Airbending after her Firebending test had been completed. Her word carried the most weight because she was Avatar Aang's widow - she knew what it took to be the Avatar. While the rest of the Order were hesitant to give the ambitious girl their blessing, Katara stated that she believed Korra was ready to begin her Airbending training. Tenzin was sent for and all things pointed toward him moving, with his family, to the South Pole to train Korra.

Unfortunately, there was unrest in Republic City. In the 70 years since the end of the 100 Year War, the City had fallen out of balance. Benders were using their abilities to oppress non-Benders and non-Benders were beginning to rise up in great numbers against Benders. The divide between the two factions was further increased by the rise of a leader in the growing anti-Bender movement, Amon.

Tenzin was the Airbender representative on the Republic City Counsel and felt it was his responsibility to care for Republic City on his own - to carry on Aang's legacy. He made the decision not to move to the South Pole and, instead, return to the city as soon as possible. Korra was heart-broken by this news - news that she would have to wait until things settled down in Republic City to complete her Avatar training. Unwilling to be hidden away from the world any longer, Korra, with Katara's blessing, broke out of the Order's compound where she had spent the last 13 years of her life and headed for the city.

It took several days for her to make it but Korra finally arrived in Republic City no worse for her travels. With her was her best friend, Naga, a polar bear dog. Naga and she explore the city, in awe of what was around them. She was very much a country girl in the big city, riding around on Naga and running through the streets, unsure of how to get to Air Temple Island - the place where Tenzin lived with his family.

As Korra wound her way through Republic City she saw for the first time that the Republic City she had in her mind and reality were two very different places. She had always thought the city was a place of balance between Benders and non-Benders. Her eyes are first opened by a man who is sleeping in a park - homeless. Later she runs into an Equalist protester and the crowd who supports him and this marked her first run-in with those who hated Benders as well as the idea of Benders using their abilities for bad instead of good.

Still very much lost, Korra stopped to ask a shop keeper the way to the Island but was interrupted by an attack by the Triple Threat Triad - a gang of Benders who use their powers to extort hardworking non-Benders. In an attempt to do the right thing and apprehend the thugs, Korra inadvertently destroyed a good chunk of the business district she was in and when the police arrive they arrest not only the gang members but also, after a long chase through the city, Korra.

At the police station, Korra was questioned by the Chief of Police, Lin Beifong, who made it very clear that she was not impressed by Korra's Avatar title and that Korra had done nothing more than cause more trouble than she had solved that day. Thankfully, for Korra, news of the Avatar's arrival in Republic City quickly reached Tenzin and he arrived at the police station to get her out. After some verbal jousting with Lin, Tenzin eventually gained Korra her freedom with the promises that he would pay for all the damages and that Korra would leave the city.

Tenzin, enraged that Korra had dared to leave the South Pole - directly disobeying the wishes of the White Lotus and his own wishes - quickly made arrangements for Korra to be returned to the White Lotus compound as soon as possible. Korra begged to be allowed to stay, pointing out how the city was so out of balance - that she now understood why Tenzin was needed there. However, Tenzin sticks to his decision and they board a boat for the Island.

The two returned to Air Temple Island to await Korra's escort. Tenzin, lost in thought, looked up to the statue of his father that was in the harbor, seeming to plead for some guidance in the matter. As Korra was about to leave Tenzin put a hand on her shoulder and told her he had changed his mind - Korra was Aang's legacy, not Tenzin, and she needed to stay. Republic City needed its Avatar once again.

Korra began her Airbending training immediately but was immediately disappointed. She had mastered the other three elements with relative ease but Airbending seemed beyond her. The young Avatar wasn't accustomed to being patient or waiting and she had about as much spirituality as a rock. Her lack of discipline frustrated Tenzin to no end and he decided that what she needed to do was remain on the Island at all times so she could concentrate - no outside distractions. Unfortunately for Tenzin, Korra had no desire to have her movement limited any longer and she had the power to do as she pleased if she so wanted.

Against Tenzin's strict orders, Korra escaped her guard and Air Temple Island and slipped into the Pro-bending Arena in Republic City. She had been forbidden by Tenzin to listen to or watch pro-bending which made it all the more enticing to her so when she managed to get inside the arena she was ecstatic. The sport appealed to her more aggressive nature and it allowed her an outlet for her frustrations over her training.

At the arena she ran into a pro-bender, Bolin, who helped sneak her into a match, much to the dismay of his brother, Mako. The two brothers made up two members of the three person pro-bending team, the Fire Ferrets. Korra, having read in the newspaper about the Fire Ferrets's recent wins was excited to meet them in person. At the completion of the match she asked Bolin to show her some moves and it was then that it was revealed to the bending brothers that the girl in their midst was the Avatar.

This is the point from which I pull Korra in order to match up with Bolin's timeline.

Personality:
To call Korra 'headstrong' would be an understatement. She is an assertive young woman, edging on aggressive, and has little to no patience. At first, it is hard to believe she is the reincarnation of Avatar Aang but as one gets to know her she isn't so different from her predecessor. Both had/have a strong sense of right and wrong and a fierce desire to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Korra is also gradually showing that she understands the enormity of her title - that she cannot do as she pleases because her destiny is to be something greater than herself.

Korra is used to being able to force her way through things. Her physical strength matches her stubbornness and with the two she has managed to conquer all challenges presented to her. However, her bending is over-the-top and, at times, destructive.

Her bending is like her personality - uncontrolled and lacking focus. She has spent 13 years of her life in seclusion, doing nothing but training. While she does not seem to resent that much, Korra possesses very little in terms of social graces or socialization in general. She tends to act first and think later in all matters including her personal life and the results are generally akin to a bull in a china shop (even though Mythbusters busted that one). She does not know fear and up until she meets Bolin she has never had a friend.

The young Avatar is ruled by her emotions. Anything she thinks comes out her mouth and anything she feels results in action. This lack of control is likely the cause of Korra's inability to Airbend. She has lived a privileged existence with everything provided to her by the Order and has never gone without. As a result, Korra can also, at times, come across as arrogant or spoiled - which does nothing to help her with her Airbending.

Despite her short-comings, Korra is a good person who genuinely cares about the world around her. She takes her Avatar duties seriously and truly wants to help people. In the end, Korra's heart and bravery more than make up for what she lacks spiritually (for now) and will likely assist her on the path ahead.

Other: Korra is the Avatar and as such is able to bend more than one element. She has mastered Waterbending, Earthbending, and Firebending. She has yet to be able to Airbend.

First Person (entry type):

[taps the screen a few times and then clears her throat]

Hey? Is anyone listening? [she sighs and then flops on the floor in front of the monitor]

I should be grateful, I know that. I mean, Tenzin could have sent me back to the South Pole. He was supposed to send me back. But - he didn't and I'm grateful for that but... I was kept a prisoner there for 13 years and now I'm being kept a prisoner here. The only difference is the scenery.

I guess I'm not really a prisoner. Pema and the Airbender kids are great and I got to see some of the city before I returned to the Island. That's more than I've even had or done before. But I want more. I just know that I'm not meant to be hidden away any longer. I'm the Avatar - I'm supposed to bring balance to the world. How can I do that when I'm busy, sitting around, and trying to clear my head?

I'm tired of waiting. I'm tired of no one knowing who I am. I want the whole world to know my name. I'm ready. I'm ready to be the Avatar.

Third Person:

Only a few days ago everything had seemed so clear. Korra had known her path - she had to escape the White Lotus's compound and make the journey to Republic City. She had to find Air Temple Island and Tenzin and she had to master Airbending. Now, though, she could not have been more conflicted as she watched the skyline of the city grow smaller.

She was finally going to Air Temple Island alright but only as a stopping off point before she was escorted back to the South Pole. The young Avatar knew she had broken the rules and disappointed both the White Lotus and Tenzin but she had honestly thought it was the right thing to do. Her teachers and protectors were pulling her back while something inside her was straining to escape.

The water below lapped against the sides of the ship in an almost rhythmic pattern. With each passing moment Korra's heart beat faster, willing her to jump off the boat and return to the city. She had to stay here - the city needed her. Her city needed her - she could almost hear it crying out. The place that Avatar Aang had helped create as a haven for Benders and non-Benders - a place of true balance - was falling apart and her heart ached for it.

How could she go back to the South Pole after all she had seen? Was this what it meant to be the Avatar? To run away and train more? Korra knew she had to do as she was told but it felt wrong. Her destiny was here, in Republic City, and now was the time to reveal herself to the world. The world needed her and Republic City needed its Avatar more than ever.
